Yet many Bhutanese dream of a life abroad. Especially young people, but also well-educated professionals, are leaving the country. Wages are low, and career prospects are limited – especially outside the cities.
The spiritual roots that sustain life in Bhutan are closely tied to place – to rituals, nature, and community – and keep people united despite change and departure.
